ABOUT CHEEK AUGMENTATION
Sunken or hollow cheeks may make you seem significantly older than you are and no one wishes to look older than their true age. At Après Plastic Surgery, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Aric Aghayan performs surgical and nonsurgical cheek augmentation to create full facial contours. Mid-face augmentation can be accomplished using either temporary dermal fillers or surgically placed cheek implants. During your initial consultation, Dr. Aghayan can discuss the pros and cons of both options in detail and what will best match your concerns and goals. Contact Après Plastic Surgery in our Portland, OR office to schedule an appointment and find out how surgical or nonsurgical cheek augmentation may help you obtain a fuller, younger-looking appearance.
The best patients for surgical and nonsurgical cheek enhancement are men and women who:
- Want a fuller mid-face
- Have lost volume in their cheeks with age
- Have genetically hollow or flat cheeks
- Have lost a significant amount of weight, resulting in sagging cheeks
- Have an imbalance in their mid-face from a congenital defect, a physical condition, or an injury
- Have overall good health
Dermal fillers are a good choice for men and women who don’t want to commit to the expense and time of surgery. Since dermal fillers create temporary results, it may also be used to get a clearer idea of how much lift and volume they need before committing to cheek implants. Surgical cheek augmentation with implants is a good choice for those who prefer longer-lasting results and are able to commit time to recovery after their surgery.
Before your procedure, Dr. Aghayan will complete a thorough exam to create a treatment plan that is best for your unique facial structure. In your consultation, you can decide on your preferred method: surgical cheek implants or nonsurgical dermal fillers.
Injectable dermal fillers will be performed as an outpatient treatment in about 20 – 30 minutes. With fillers, the injection sites will be cleaned and marked along the mid-face. Next, the dermal filler will be gently injected into the cheeks and massaged to fill the needed areas. You can leave immediately after the treatment and get back to your normal activities.
Cheek augmentation surgery is performed as an outpatient procedure at an accredited surgical facility because patients are generally sedated using general anesthesia. When you are ready, thin incisions are created in your mouth through the upper gums and a pocket will be made above the cheekbones. Next, the selected implants will be placed and the incisions in the mouth will be sutured. The surgery typically lasts around an hour and you can be allowed to go home with a responsible adult to start your recovery at home.
WHAT TO EXPECT
After surgery, you should expect to have swelling, tightness, and bruising for 1 – 2 weeks after your surgery. Strenuous activity that may cause your facial muscles to strain (such as weight lifting) needs to be skipped for 7 – 10 days. Total healing usually takes around two months; however, the outcomes are long-lasting.
With dermal fillers, your face can be sore with mild inflammation for around 3 – 5 days. Ice packs and non-prescription pain medication may be used to ease any discomfort. Final results are usually visible in 1 – 2 weeks. Follow-up treatments will be needed as dermal fillers are a short-term treatment.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
How much does cheek augmentation cost?
Getting connected with the right plastic surgeon can be invaluable. Depending on the method of augmentation you choose to have with Dr. Aghayan, the costs of your procedure can vary. After the consultation and treatment planning session, one of our patient coordinators will go over the fee schedule with you. His experience, education, and a keen ability for artistically placing fillers or implants are all well worth the investment you will make in your facial appearance.
What type of dermal fillers do you use for injections?
When selecting a dermal filler for your cheeks, Dr. Aghayan may use Voluma by Juvéderm or Restylane Lyft. Both of these use hyaluronic acid to enhance the cheeks by filling in sunken, hollow areas beneath the surface of your skin. This is a temporary solution for volume loss or for the appearance of having higher cheekbones.
What if I have an asymmetrical face?
All people have asymmetrical faces. If you are concerned that your facial asymmetry is unattractive or that you do not have a balance to your overall facial appearance because of the volume or height of your cheekbones, you can schedule a consultation with Dr. Aghayan to have him assess your options. If you are considering a cheek implant or filler to make your cheekbones the same height and higher, please contact our office in Portland to schedule your appointment.
Can I have a fat grafting performed to fill in my cheeks?
Dr. Aghayan uses advanced fat grafting techniques for the restoration of volume in the soft tissues of the face and around the orbits. Using your own fat can create a more youthful shape to your face and may even feel more natural to the touch than a synthetic implant or a temporary dermal filler. To determine if a fat grafting procedure is right for you, we recommend setting up an appointment with Dr. Aghayan for an exam and consultation at our office in Portland, OR.
